SONGS I LIKE: I'll Stand By You (The Pretenders)

Let me see you through
'Cause I've seen the dark side too

Most people know the Pretenders from a few songs such as "Middle of the Road" which still drives leftists bonkers with how Rush Limbaugh uses it for his theme. Early on, The Pretenders were a rough, edgy punky sort of band with a bad girl Chrissie Hynde as the lead. She's still up there, but especially with the song "Middle of the Road" she sung about how she's not the kind she used to be, she's growing up and not so rebellious these days.

And some of the music this band puts out don't really fit their early categories. The Christmas song "2000 Miles" is one of the sweetest, most touching love songs I know, and this song, "I'll Stand By You," is another.

In this song, she sings of love that endures, a kind of commitment and relationship almost bizarre and shocking in modern culture. Although Chrissie Hynde hasn't lived up to the lyrics (much like Billy Joel putting out "Don't Go Changing" shortly before divorcing his first wife for Christie Brinkley), the song still has a great deal of power.

Like "She Supports Her Man," this is the kind of love song guys like to hear. We don't care so much about soaring romanticism, we care about you being there, trusting us, and staying loyal. Especially when things go bad or we're having a very hard time, we need to hear that and know it. And that's what ever lyric of this is about. A woman who stands by her man, no matter what.

Oh, why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don't be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
'Cause I've seen the dark side too

When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothin' you confess, could make me love you less

I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

So, if you're mad, get mad
Don't hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now

Hey, what you got to hide?
I get angry too
Well I'm a lot like you

When you're standing at the crossroads
And don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
'Cause even if you're wrong

I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you

Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you

And when, when the night falls on you, baby
You're feelin' all alone
You won't be on your own

I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you

I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Yeah

Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you

I'll stand by you
No, no, no, no, no
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you

Fun fact: Guy who wrote this song also wrote "Like A Virgin." Which goes to show you...something.
