Quote of the Day

"The palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'palestinian people' to oppose Zionism."
-PLO leader executive committee member Zahir Muhsein, 1977

i'm not particularly sympathetic to the Palestinians' "negotiating" tactics, but to be fair at this point this is basically splitting hairs. you could cite plenty of examples of countries split apart in the past and developing a separate national identity even though they're ethnically the same.

thought Romney had the better of the exchange with Gingrich on this.

the "palestinian" people did't break away from anyone, they're refugees from surrounding areas, pretending to be a specific people only as a political means to destroy Israel, as this PLO leader points out. They're a fiction, there was no palestine as a nation before Israel was rebuilt. There were people living in the region, just like there are people living in the panhandle of Texas, but that doesn't make them "panhandlers," a distinct ethnic group or nation.
