CHRISTMAS CAROLS YOU DON'T KNOW - Beautiful Night

Look now, friends comin' round to the door
Filling the parlor and porch
Singing and laughing out loud
Beautiful, beautiful sound

Pam Tillis is the only slightly less talented daughter of country musician Mel Tillis (her album singing with him is wonderful). She recorded a Christmas disc back in 2005 called Just In Time For Christmas that is mostly old standards and a few original ones she wrote. The one that really stands out in my mind is called "Beautiful Night" and she says in the CD notes:
Of the three new songs, "Beautiful Night" was the one that sent me flying into my manager's office proclaiming "I'm ready to record my Christmas album!" It paints a picture so vivid, sweet, and homey. I wish I could capture it in a snow glove and keep it on my desk all year long.
If you haven't heard this album, you haven't heard this song and that's a shame because it is pretty and old timey and should be covered by more folks. Chances are if you listen to a lot of country you may have heard it around this time of year before.

The music is set with a fiddle in a way that evokes mountain bluegrass, and you can almost hear the cracking of the logs burning in the fire, warming your body as the song warms your heart. It isn't about Christmas in specific, but it brings to mind the spirit of coming together and joining hearts in joy and comfort with fellowship of loved ones and friends on a special night in winter, and that's part of what Christmas means to us.

Hush now, quiet has covered the ground
Fresh fallen snow all around
Stars burning holes in the sky
Beautiful, beautiful night,
Beautiful, beautiful night.

Wait now, smoke 'round the chimney will rise
Filling the fields and the sky
Circling cedar and pine
Beautiful, beautiful night,
Beautiful, beautiful night.

Beautiful, beautiful...
All is calm, all is bright.

Look now, friends comin' round to the door
Filling the parlor and porch
Singing and laughing out loud
Beautiful, beautiful sound
Beautiful, beautiful night

Beautiful, beautiful...
All is calm, all is bright.
All is bright

Beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful, beautiful night.

Check out Pam's disc if you can, its pretty good all the way through, and it even has a few jazz-influenced bits like What Are You Doing New Year's Eve and a medley of Christmas rockin songs that I didn't care for but breaks up the tone nicely. And there's one more song she wrote that I'll be highlighting later this week, God willing.
