Robbie Cooper did a photo essay showing real life people and the characters they play in online games. One of the photos on the Izismile roundup of these images is this one:

Now, in a way this is a really sad picture, because this kid is in bad shape. His body is wracked with some malady and he's required to have machinery just to survive. At the same time, he's able to play online games and be what he can't in real life.

To a certain extent that's why everyone plays these games, to be someone they aren't or cannot be in real life. But for this little guy, the freedom is significantly more important. He might be destroyed in real life, but his mind is vital and he's able to use a game (no idea what game, I don't recognize it) to be as strong and fast and tough and adventurous as he cannot for real.

Some might think that picture is depressing, I think its pretty cool.

I thought exactly the same thing when I first saw the photo. Very poignant.

Speaking of Star Trek, there's almost a "Captain Pike retires to Talos IV" subtext going on.

" out a life of illusion in which his devastating handicap no longer existed."

That's a snapshot of Star Wars Galaxies.

I wondered if it wasn't that or Fallout, but I didn't recognize the armor.

Thanks for the ID!
