"Why does Obama play golf so much?

So he can claim that he saved or created more jobs than his handicap."

President Obama recently stated that he wished he could go places without such a big fuss. Its true that the President of the United States cannot just sneak out for a movie or a bite to eat, it is a major operation just to leave the White House. At Hearst Magazine, president Obama said
"I just miss — I miss being anonymous," he said at the meeting in the White House State Dining Room. "I miss Saturday morning, rolling out of bed, not shaving, getting into my car with my girls, driving to the supermarket, squeezing the fruit, getting my car washed, taking walks. I can't take a walk."
His political opponents would be glad if President Obama was just citizen Obama and was anonymous, but that's the price of fame and power. It is extremely rare someone at the level of celebrity President Obama has reached has the slightest privacy. You can't have it both ways, being able to go places anonymously and yet be fabulously famous.

President Obama also said "I just want to go through Central Park (in New York) and watch folks passing by...Spend the whole day watching people. I miss that," yet he didn't bother with doing any of that before he was president. Barack Obama has spent most of his life trying to be powerful, famous, and noticed. He's worked hard to be a celebrity, and he relishes the attention.

So why bring this up at all? Well folks have noticed that President Obama plays a lot of golf. He seems to do it more often when there's some sort of crisis or a time when he's supposed to be standing strong as a leader. In fact, if you add up all the time he's spent on the links alone since becoming president, Obama has spent the equivalent of more than two solid weeks, day and night, golfing. Even his friends have begun to comment on this phenomenon.

President Obama tried to explain this in the same interview:
He says he enjoys golf but is not the fanatic that some have portrayed him to be because of the frequency of his golf outings.

"It's the only excuse I have to get outside for four hours at a stretch," he told the Hearst executives.
This whole bit was damage control. President Obama has been informed that his constant golfing and frequent vacations make him look irresponsible and frivolous with his time. He's out golfing when he should be fighting, he's always taking off for vacations when something major happens. Right after telling the nation he'd never rest until the gulf was cleaned up during the Deepwater Horizon oil leak, he left for vacation, several times. Just after telling congress that he'd fight tooth and nail against the Republican budget efforts, he left for a weekend in Williamsburg.

I think this little interview was a setup to try to spin President Obama's trips and time off as a reasonable response of just a regular guy who wishes he could just be like you and me. Never mind that he has a special place called Camp David he can go any time he needs time away from people and Washington DC; that's a camp and its in the forest.

President Obama was just looking for a way to make it not seem so noticeable when he heads off to golf another 18 holes when he should be leading the way as president in the events of the day.
