SONGS I LIKE - Dreams I'll Never See (Allman Brothers - by Molly Hatchet)

Just one more morning I had to wake up with the blues

Molly Hatchet is best known for its Frank Frazetta album covers and "Flirtin' With Disaster." Molly Hatchet is one of the mid seventies southern rock bands that, with ZZ Top, Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, and several others dominated rock and roll for years.

Molly Hatchet had a string of hits, but never made it as big as some of their fellow southern rockers. One of their absolute best was this song "Dreams I'll Never See." A cover of an early Allman Brothers song "Dreams" most of the song is instrumental, with a building rhythm guitar line that works equally well acoustic as well as full electric. Like the best southern rock, it was guitar-driven with soaring solos and a strong riff to carry the music along, but behind it all was a heart-driven message.

There's not much to the lyrics of "Dreams I'll Never See," but the song is over six minutes long and worth every minute to listen to. This is a man who's had so many things go wrong he feels like everything seems to be falling apart, so he turns to the woman he loves. He has so many things he wanted to do and see, things he never will experience, and that weighs heavy on a man. The core of the "midlife crisis" for men is based on this: all my youthful dreams are failed, I have accomplished almost nothing. Yet he is determined to get up and go on, and all he needs is the love of a good woman to give him the strength to carry on.

Just one more morning I had to wake up with the blues.
Pulled myself out of bed, put on my walking shoes.
Went up on the mountain to see what I could see.
The whole world was falling right down in front of me.

'Cause I'm hung up on my dreams I'll never see.
Yeah babe, oh help me babe.
Or this will surely be the end of me, yeah.

Pull myself together, put on a new face,
Climb down off the hilltop baby,
And get back in the race.

'Cause I'm hung up on my dreams I'll never see.
Yeah babe, oh help me babe.
Or this will surely be the end of me, yeah.
